One local radio station is becoming the first in the U.P. to broadcast with a cleaner and clearer digital signal. In addition to its regular analog signal, last month WNMU Public Radio 90 started broadcasting in digital HD. The new digital signal sorts out interference and limits static and hissing. It can also offer multiple programs running at the same time. Most of the money for the project has been raised through grants and donations, but they still need $30,000 to finish the first phase. Michael Coleman, general manager of Wayne State University's WDET-FM, was charged in 14A District Court in Ann Arbor with one felony count of embezzlement while at his former job at Michigan Public Media's WUOM-FM (91.7). He could face five years in prison, a fine of $10,000 or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is more. Two other former Michigan Public Media employees -- Jeremy Nordquist, 28, of Saline and Justin Ebright, 35, of Whitmore Lake -- were also each charged with two felony counts of embezzlement and conspiracy to embezzle property and goods worth more than $1,000 but less than $20,000. Reynolds was director of Michigan Public Media, the umbrella organization that covers WUOM, 91.7-FM; affiliated radio stations in Flint and Grand Rapids; Michigan Television, the public-TV channel that broadcasts as WFUM from Flint; and the Michigan Channel, which carries U-M programming on the local Comcast cable system. |
